I also had to stop being so critical to enjoy the 1940 version - the modern clothes and heairstyles bothered me - but you can't go wrong with Vivien and, in special Robert Taylor in his best performance. Congratulations on such a great review.
Don't forget to read my contribution to the blogathon! :)
Cheers!
Le
www.criticaretro.blogspot.comLêhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02419693749682458647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797087968104121636.post-1332688395755106252018-11-19T19:02:09.526-08:002018-11-19T19:02:09.526-08:00I never considered Ethan Edwards either a bad man ...I never considered Ethan Edwards either a bad man or in the wrong. His family was murdered and his niece kidnapped and enslaved. He rescued her. That is what good men and warriors do. That he despised the perpetrators, his enemy, makes perfect sense. It was war. Want to be sweet and tuck them in, a way to be on the losing side. During The war in the 1940's we bombed Dresden. A lot of weak nonentities who got the benefit of victory did not like it. The hell with them. As General Powell wrote regarding Vietnam and why we did not win: You have to defeat the enemy on the field and demoralize the civilian population with immediate massive effort. The incremental stuff does not work. I paraphrase.barrylanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09507827607600595861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797087968104121636.post-87949480819318464452018-11-18T09:40:40.102-08:002018-11-18T09:40:40.102-08:00Hi Walter, I agree. WATERLOO BRIDGE(1940) is a great movie with a top notch cast led by 26-year-old Vivien Leigh and 28-year-old Robert Taylor(ages at the time of filming January-March, 1940). Leigh and Taylor were both in top form in this Classic. Yes, Taylor was in top form, also. Robert Taylor was a fine actor. I've said it before and I will say it again, in THE LAST HUNT(1956) Robert Taylor's Charlie Gilson makes John Wayne's Ethan Edwards of THE SEARCHERS(1956) look like an angel of mercy.

Walter S.https://www.blogger.com/profile/02507750468123235383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797087968104121636.post-24647003517011021622018-11-13T07:09:26.967-08:002018-11-13T07:09:26.967-08:00Yes, on paper it certainly sounds like an over-bak...Yes, on paper it certainly sounds like an over-baked soap opera.Margot Shelbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06580855468061590981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797087968104121636.post-18778429299818846092018-11-12T18:59:35.482-08:002018-11-12T18:59:35.482-08:00You're right – in less capable hands, this fil...You're right – in less capable hands, this film would be a mess. As a personal observer, albeit in our time, those fine people we have come in contact with, are just that, with the odd notable exception, just as the so-called lower classes have their own share of jerks. Robert Taylor was just fine. A man with personal class and refinement, as well as capable of real depth when in a part that was right for him. Had he not been cast in leads a little too early, up to and including Magnificent Obsession. Keep up the great work. This is second to none.barrylanehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09507827607600595861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4797087968104121636.post-21206741849555193162018-11-09T07:11:25.315-08:002018-11-09T07:11:25.315-08:00So true. I have to say that the ending of the 30's one sounds so much darker and more shocking than the 1940 one, although that one is pretty dark too. I'm so happy that you pointed out the hair and costume errors, as much as I love the 1940 film those period errors take me out of the film somewhat. I like that this film shows how war and death impacts on those left at home during war. One of Vivien Leigh's best performances in my opinion. Such a moving story.
